How to Become a School Psychologist
School psychologists help children and their parents deal with behavioral and mental health issues. These professionals work in elementary and secondary schools or school district offices. School psychologists are trained in both education and psychology. Their main goal is to ensure that students have the chance to learn in a safe and supportive environment.

School Psychologist
If you plan to become a school psychologist, you should have an undergraduate bachelor’s degree in psychology or education. Keep in mind that most states require that candidates hold a specialist degree or master’s degree in school psychology, psychology or counseling. You can earn a specialist degree (EdS) in school psychology through roughly 3 years of graduate study in education and psychology (at least 60 semester hours), followed by a one-year internship.
Nowadays you have a chance to continue your education by earning a doctoral degree in school psychology, education or special education. These programs usually last 3-5 years.
It’s very important to underline that every state requires that professionals in this field be certified and/or licensed to practice school psychology. The National Association of School Psychologists offers national certification, which consists of completion of a master’s program (60 semester hours) and a supervised 1200-hour internship. After that one should pass the National School Psychology Examination.
